FUEL FILTER BOSCH vs KNECHT vs MANN ?
Has anyone ever used Bosch Fuel Filter for their MB?
My 99 C280 is due for a change. When I shop around, I found that there are big differences in prices: Bosch -$30 Mann -$48 Knecht-$75 Any comment or suggestion? Thanks, -S- |

Those are all acceptable. Buy the least expensive. The most important thing is to just change it.
Good luck, |

I have no in depth knowledge of the 202 chassis, but it is so similar to the 124, that I'll bet if you look underneath, in front of the right rear wheel, you will find a plastic cover, that when removed, exposes the fuel pump and fuel filter.
Good luck, |

BOSCH
I replaced my fuel filter half a year ago. The car is a W210.
I Used the cheaper BOSCH. the car runs fine. I never felt any difference. The Bosch were a bit smaller though. It is located underneath the car. On the driver side near the rear wheels. You can see a cover, remove and you will see the filter bundled with the fuel pump. An easy DIY. saves us big bucks going to the dealer. |

on my 1998 C-230 I replaced my fuel filter,
disconnect battery open fuel filler cap you'll prorbaly need a socket extension to remove protective shield use hose clamps - you'll need two - you can modify vice-grip - but be sure rounded surfaces that won't damage hoses are used. old OEM hose clamps will probably need to be clipped off and new screw on clamps used need to really work the fuel hoses of the old filter, I needed rubber gloves and a safe prying tool - don't want any sparks take your VIN # to dealer to be sure of the type of connection filter uses to attach to hose - I know on my C230- two type of connection were used depending on model year. hope I gave you some useful info |

When I replaced the fuel filter on my C280, I just unclamped the filter and carefully unclamped and pulled the fuel lines off. A good amount of fuel will spill out of the line but there was no significant amount of residual pressure. Just be careful, the fuel that is in the line from the engine to the filter will dump all of its contents out pretty quickly then it will stop when it is empty. Then reattach new filter and hoses and you are done. Larry Bible's description of the fuel filter location is correct for the 202 chasis.

1. Jack up Passanger side rear of car for clearance.
2. Unscrew 3 10mm nuts through access holes in black plastic cover. Use 3/8" driver with 12" extension. Remove plastic cover. 3. 3 rubber donuts hold fuel filter/ fuel pump clamp, remove them from bracket using a screwdriver. 4. Unscrew phillips screw to loosen fuel filter from clamp. 5. Cut fuel hose clamps off fuel line using sharp knife. 6. Slide fuel filter out of clamp. 7. Install new hose clamps on fuel lines and connect lines to new filter. 8. Install new filter into silver clamp. Start Engine and check for leaks. 9. Shut Down engine and tighten philips screw into clamp. 10.Install donuts on brackets. 11.Install black plastic cover using 3 10mm black nuts. 12.Clean-up and lower car to ground. You saved $200.00! |

How often one should change the fuel filter? It must be different depending on the model and the usage. But any recommended intervals or general rule of thumb for relatively newer models, e.g. post 2000 model year?

Figure at least every four years, a clogged filter can cause issues througout the fuel delivery system- even shorten the life of other components. But the manual is the BEST guide to maintenance.
If your a sufficient-properly trained - PROFESSIONAL mechanic and know how to use a pipe cutter ( not a saw ) to open a filter, you can do that to assess the quality of the fuel tank and fuel. THIS IS DANGEROUS - fuel (fumes) can ignite. also this is a time to check fuel lines and brake lines runnng underneath the chassis - not the only time. And avoid running your tank down to empty or near empty. Helps thin out contaminants in the fuel and cool the fuel pump. |

Bosch may or may not come with required sealing washers. Others will.

Bosch may be OE, But I prefer Mann
I think Bosch may be the current OE. When I replaced the original filter, it was Bosch. I think someone on this forum also confirmed that. I am not 100% certain. But anyway, I play it safe, I always use MANN filters.
put the old filter in a clean clear jar, you will be surprised how much contaminant is traped or better yet cut up one with a pipe cutter. I know someone who went 9 years and 180K without filter change. Finally paid the price for a new filter and fuel pump ($420) I change fuel filter every 50-60K miles or 2 years. |

Fuel filter replacement W210
does anyone have DIY instructions on replacing the fuel filter on a W210 (1999 E320 gas engine)?
Where is the fuel filter located? Is the filter in the shape of a canister, or is it inserted in the gas tank or fuel pump? |
