Ticking time bomb?

Hi guys,
I have a ticking problem with my '92 W124 E230. There is a ticking sound (like a clock) that comes from the front passenger seat. Upon removing the floorboard, I see that the sound enamated from a boxy object that looks like a Relay. The sound will continue and then stop by itself after 30 secs or so, but will recur everytime I press the brake. Then the sequence continues. I just wanted to know what the "Relay" is and its function. Is that an indication that my brakes are about to go? But nothing lights up on the dash. How do you stop that annoying sound, beginning to sound like a time bomb; something about to go kaput? Need advice from all gurus out there.

azhari,
You were a great help last time. Wonder whether you know just what is that relay sitting at the bottom of the front passenger floorboard?
