Stromberg Oil

Hello,

I have a 72' Benz 220/8 with a 175CD Stromberg carburetor, that i'm going to start up, I don't get to start it that much so I was wondering what kind of oil should I put into it? When I bought it the old owner put gas into it saying that it helped it start, but before he bought it it had been sitting for about 10 years. So it hasn't been started all that much. Right now I just have normal 5W 30 motor oil in it, should i put something different into it?

Thank you

Hi

I went through a lot of grief with this oil recently. The oil is sort of like an accelerator pump. So I thought: the more fuel the better right? I used 20w50 in it for a long time and my fuel mileage was horrendous. I never made the relationship to the damper oil but my driving was mostly done in start/stop city traffic which really magnified this problem. I switched back to ATF as recommended in the manual and everything came back to normal.

Just regular ATF, where I work there is regular and there is type F which one will work the best or does it not matter.

I imagine the SU carb oil I get from Victoria British for the MG would work well in the Stromberg carbs. Before getting the real deal the carbs were loaded with 30 weight and the dampers reacted really slow.

I use 20 wt oil in my SUs. It is available at most motorcycle shops as fork oil. Shouldn't cost as much as the SU or Stromberg oil at Vic British or Moss Motors.

Anything over 20 wt gives too much damping and results in a richer mixture on acceleration. Shouldn't affect it under cruising conditions though. Make sure everything is clean and free to move.

Just my $.02,
Wes

I had a 1974 Jag XJ12L with 4 x Stromberg 175's. Suggest using the old auto store shelf regular resident "Marvel Mystery Oil". It worked for me.
