Sunroof Issue

Hey guys

I'm having some problems with the sunroof on my '93 124. It seems to be "off track" so to speak, but I know that this is impossible on this car.

The switch is dead. After pulling the reading lamp/switch box out and testing it with an amp tester, I was able to Jump Start the roof open in the back, tilting it up and down with ease via a wire from each socket to socket

When I attempt to open the roof completeley, the motor runs but the roof studders tehn lowers on the passenger side and stays high on the driver's side.

This happens when i attempt to open manually from the trunk as well.

My guess is something broke on teh drivers side and It needs to be replaced but i cannot get the roof open to remove hte headliner.

Anyone have any ideas?
A search of the archives helped but I wasn't able to find any of this specific info.
Thanks.

Hi Sam
You can unsnap the headliner section on the underside of the sunroof itself (there are 4 or 5 snaps, takes a good tug to disconnect them) then slide the headliner panel itself back towards the rear of the car, and see what is broken. PROBABLY (no guarantee) it's the "sliding jaw" on the affected side, when this happens you usually need the "bridge", which ties the two sides together, the "buckle" which connects the cable to the "bridge", and most guys would replace the cable (inner cable) at the same time. Gets very costly, depending on labor times. NOT the kind of thing that a novice can usually tackle alone, better to have experienced hands doing it, but you can always sneak a peek. I'm gonna have some 124 sunroof parts on EBay soon, but nothing you need.

Thanks for the reply and the honest opinion.

Guess it will head to the shop.

No problem. I should have mentioned they'll probably want to replace the sliding part on each side. This makes sense to me, if they don't it's sorta like having a worn out engine, but only replacing the rings on one side.
When you're not experienced/careful enough, you can break the new parts, and they're not exactly cheap.
