280SEL 4.5L cuts off suddently but has great spark
This is my dailly driver Mercedes, she purs like a wild cat and I could't be happier. Today on the way back to work from lunch she just died on a right turn. The engine didn't sputter or shake... just died. I asumed spark right away but after pulling the center wire and cranking it I got the spark to jump .5". I checked everything over and everything looked to be conected as it always was. The fule filter and all normal tune up parts have been changed within the last 3K miles. Anyway, this happened once before a few months ago, I replaced the balist resister without testing the old one and was up and running. I'm thinking now that I have a problem with the ECU or a sensor going to the ECU which is causing the injectors to not fire. The connector to the distributer points is on firm so I don't know what it could be. After about 15 min of sitting she started up with a bit of sputtering... it smothed out in a few seconds and I was up and running again just like nothing happened.
So what gives? whats weak on the D- injection system that could cause this??? |

You check the fuel pump and its wiring? You should be able to hear it buzz when you turn the key to "Run" before starting, did it buzz? Did you have fuel pressure?
Other than that, I dunno what it could be - I would think an ECU would just die, not stop working then suddenly start again ![]()

Before checking pumps, ECUs, etc... also check for spark at the plugs. I've seen distributor rotors and caps short out.
Happy Motoring, Mark

Distributor cap was loose on mine one time, nearly died turning right. Left was OK, for some reason. Ruined a new cap and rotor, I hadn't gotten the rotor down all the way.
Otherwise, I suspect the fuel pump or relay. ECU will either be dead or not, not intermittant EXCEPT for a loose power or ground wire -- my sister's 73 Fastback did this, drove me nuts until I found the bad ground -- replaced the wire and it ran perfectly (other than collisions and leaky injectors) for the next three years.
