auto transmission help!

Ok,

I finally decided to pull the auto tranny out of my 68 110 230 and put in another auto tranny that I bought from a guy in Tennessee.. It was a remanufactured one... We don't know how long it was sitting, but it hadn't been used.. could be many years...

Put it in... added tranny fluid, got all the usual leaks.. haha... not worried about those at the moment..

It will engaged in 1st gear and spin the wheels.. in other gears it will not engage... Neutral works and Park works...

Should I just let it sit for a few days with the ATF in it to see if it free's up anything? I have the CD rom and it shows a serious piece of equipment to test all the modulators, pressures, etc... Should I build this and evaluate?

The more I mess around with these auto's the more I want a manual! haha

At least this is a fairly easy job to do!

thanks!

First, check to see if the kickdown switch under the gas pedal is stuck.
Does your autobox have the three-way servo or solenoid on the top of the case? There's a switch at the carburetor/throttle and electrical circuit controling this that needs to be properly checked and adjusted for the trans to work properly. Try to get a copy of a factory repair manual for more details.

Happy Motoring, Mark

Reverse works? Also, by "first", do you mean "Drive" as in "right after the "neutral" position, or do you mean all the way down to the last of the driving positions as far from Park as you can get?

Are all the bushings on the linkage new and tight? If it's column shift, is the selector linkage well lubed and moving well?

kickdown servo is working fine...

furthest forward gear in floor mount gear selector... is when tires will engage.. It will not in selector position 3 or 4....

bushings are fine.. i have it adjusted to work fine in the gear selections...

Reverse is not working... I have not driven it around, i have it on jack stands at all 4 corners...

It's interesting, that when the gears are engaged and the tires are spinning forward, if I engaged the brake pedal, it immediately disengages the transmission... I'm guessing that the vacuum modulator is working because it can sense this change????

on the other transmission that I have, it sat for 3 years, and it took an hour or two of driving to get it to behave normally(after that 3 year period) after that it worked fairly normal.... It however had always had some problems... and they became so bad, that I decided to try another transmission..

Thanks for the help!

here's an update...

after letting it soak in the new atf overnight, i now have a working 2, 3, and 4... it seems to actually shift from 2 to 3rd gears on the jackstands... so this is a good sign...

Reverse still is doing nothing....
