I was in Macon last week checking out the 260e I own when I saw a sad sight. I saw a 6.3 sitting behind the shop where my 260e was, just wasting away! The car was white with a navy interior. It looked really good! The interior is new and the injection pump had been redone but, the car was sitting on its belly and had not moved in a year!! The shop owner said the owner of the car passed away and the guy's son lives in Maine and just wants him to sell the car. He said he had an offer of $8k and he turned it down! I wonder what that car is really worth? It is rust free and looks really good except for the fact it has sat for a year untouched! I am not in a position to buy today but may be interested soon. I guess the bags are gone and would need total replacement. I would love to have this car one day when I got $20k to burn!

I've looked a few, just casually. There's one in my mechanic's shop occasionally - the guy next door to him ownes it. Decent shape, could probably use some paint, but not too bad. I told him I'd give him 10K for it - and that's really what it's worth (maybe 12 or 13). If this car really needs new bags, he should take the 8K and run. However, the air suspension on a 30 year old car shouldn't be expected to hold air for a whole year!

I recently bought two 6.3's,and started them after a long period of inaction.Both cars were down,one car now sits up for weeks at a time,the other is not so inclined.The air bladders are relatively cheap in comparison to the other components of the suspension and are probably not the problem anyhow,the car may just need to be started and the the suspension pressurised.Who knows.

I would be very careful. There seems to be an oversupply of these cars. Considering how rare they are, there are an amazing number of them for sale. I have seen them as low as $3K and as high as $20K plus.
I personally would have taken the $8K.

6.3 suspension
Be careful indeed. Although the air bellows are relatively inexpensive, what usually causes the suspensions to leak is the valves. They, on the other hand, are quite pricey but can be rebuilt by Star Motors in New York.

6.3 woes
Hi all,
I have had a beautiful 6.3 on eBay three times now, and can't seem to get a decent offer on it. This car is really one of the better ones around, although the "deal killer" has been the fact that it does not have a sunroof. If anyone is interested in making an offer, let me know. At this point we are trying to make some space in the garage for other MB's, most likely more daily-drivers. See previous post "6.3 for sale". |

What kind of "decent offer" are you looking for if still available? Have had a 69 and a 71 both euros imported by myself, so I'm not scared of them but the price must be right, market is way down now on 6.3, 6.9's and don't seem to pick up since they are so expensive to maintain.

Thanks for the reply. Have a beautifully restored 76 450 SEL all mechanicals and cosmetic done; 3 owner car in rare blue magnatite metallic color that gets lots of attention if you are interested.

It's funny this topic has been revived because I forgot about it! I saw this 6.3 in Macon for sale on www.m-100.org last week. (I am talking about the one from my first post.) I have been corresponding with the owner in Maine and thinks he can get $8000 or so for it. I think it is crazy! He parked the car there nearly a 2 yrs ago and it has not been driven. There is a little body damage in the rear and water has been leaking into the trunk. It has been started a few times a year but this type of storage is devastating to this car, right??? It has been sitting outside and not driven. Even if the airsuspension has been replaced it will probably be bad again? I want the car due to it being salvageable and its location is close to me. What do you guys think I should offer for the car?? Any suggestions would be great. Thanks!!

Based on my experience with 2 6.3's water leaks in the trunk means rusted wells or trunk floor? can be fixed by a good bodyman with similar (but cheaper) 108/109 cut outs from scrapyards. Air bellows were not expensive for mine but I hear valves can be; only source is Neal at Star Motors (NY) but now expensive; can try direct from the fatherland. Rear ends are very weak point but figure $500 for a good rebuilt. No offense to current 6.3-6.9 owners but market values have collapsed (had a 6.9 also) so $3,500 could be right but expect to put some $ on it if you do not have a good reasonable bodyman and knowledgeable mechanic. No offense to Mercedes mechanics either but with the collapse in market values they no longer can get customers to pay top prices they want for their help so 6.3-6.9's cars suffer from a lot of neglect. I am of the opinion that $20K for 6.3-6.9's are a thing of the past and those good old days won't be back no matter what the "collector car" appraisers/magazines say. Remember they need to sell those magazines so the illusions must be maintained.

There's a drivable 6.3 in NJ for sale (for the past year!) the guy is asking 2,500$ and not getting it. I presume that it's a rust bucket. I've never seen it and I've never asked, but it's in the local paper EVERY week w/o a price change.

I'm pretty heavily involved with the M-100 Group, and was just out in New York at Neil's shop (Star Motors). They're rebuilding my 6.9 transmission for me. This is my second 6.9, and it's my dream car. DB904 Navy Blue with Bamboo leather. There aren't many in that color combination around. I like 6.3s too, but I always thought that the 6.9 was more of a "useable" hotrod. 6.3s always seem to require alot of fiddling around with the injection/ignition to get them to run right. I've had the opportunity to purchase a few 6.3s and passed them all up due to rust problems. If I could find one with a good drivetrain, I'd snatch it up to convert a W111 coupe to 6.3 power. Karl Middelhauve of Classic Car Restorations in Woxall, PA has done a couple and they're awesome! The same weekend I was at Star, I decided to follow Neil down to Karl's in Pennsylvania (his shop is right outside Philadelphia), and his facility was quite impressive, and he had about 15 600s there! Everything from SWBs to Pullman limos and even a hearse and a coupe!
