W123 280E Air Intake Tube
My 280E doesn't have the tube that ran from the air cleaner to the front of the car.
I was wondering if this may affect fuel ecomony as well as it's drawing hotter air and therefore less air mass? I don't think this system has an intake air temperature sensor or a mass air flow sensor , does it? Sorry for all the silly questions. Just trying to sort out my new toy.

I am guessing you have a 1977, the only year the 280E used the monster intake hose. I agree with your senario of air mass, but I doubt the fuel economy difference is much. To the other questions, you are right - no sensors.
I have a '77 as well, and was able to replace the OEM air scoop thru the dealer for $20. I am considering 2 OEM plastic air intake hoses for a 300D. The idea is to run one straight to the area of the right-front shock-mount, connect to an L, possibly exhaust tubing attached to the wheel well, and continue from the L with the 2nd plastic hose to the air scoop. I have been told that the ID of the 300D hose is basically the same as the old monster hose, which is now close to $90 and looks like hell. |

Actually, no. I have a '79 so it seems it is not supposed to have one. I've only just bought the car and it looked like there was something missing down next to the radiator, so I assumed that was the big old air intake.
Seems, I assumed wrong! Many thanks for the information.

The '79 model uses the same air-filter housing, but with a snout about 10" long from the front of the housing reaching to just to the left of the radiator.

Ah, well mine has nothing from the end of the air filter itself.

Your filter sounds very interesting. How about posting a photo.
