om615 glowplug conversion

I got my 1967 mercedes diesel motor in my '56 cletrac and its moving uner its own power now. It starts hard. I know i burnt one of the gowies out because there is no more arcing on the wire when i hook it to a battery. I want to change the glowplugs to the pencil type. I saw an adapter somewhere but i cant find it now. Anyone know what im talking about? Im going to adjust the valves because i think they are off. They havent been adjusted in years because it wasnt used much by previous owner before i got it a year ago. It smokes white when running and i have to give it some ether EACH time i start it if it sits for a minute or two.

ALSO----DO I HAVE AN OM615? that is all i could gather on what kind of engine the car had in it before i took out the engine. The car was a 1967 200d. P.S. if anyone was wondering..i turned the commutator true on a lathe with my uncle and that fixed the starter problem.

Thanks in advance!

Anthony

Hi,if it is a 1967 car,the engineshould be a om621,not much different to the early om 615,fitted in w115 models. You have vacuum governed IP,the oil filter setup is the same as on om 615(1968-1975)-one plastic mesh full flow and a big cannister secondary(by-pass flow)filter. There is no need for any glow plug adapters, just buy a set of pencil type glow plugs with 18x1,5 tread, make jumper wires and get rid of the grounding cable from cyl.1 glow plug to the cyl.head.No need for any relais either, the change is very easy...

when adjusting thevalves, bear in mind that the valve tolerance on om 621 is measured and set between the cap nut and the rocker arm. On om615/616/617-between the rocker arm and the cam lobe!!!
And check/renew the motor oil in the IP.Still have the oil bath air filter?
DO NOT give her any ether, pls.
If it smokes white, you may need to test your injectors.
Check, actually renew all the fuel lines, install the plastic fuel pre-filter.The original om 621 design used a metal fuel return line with big flat bronze nipples to the injectors,do not overtighten the nuts that hold`em...

Hey thanks incog,

It could still be injectors, I am going to put pencils in her and adjust the valves. Thanks for clearing that up, i was not sure where to put my feeler guage to measure for clearance. On the vacuum pump, the port on the right, where is that supposed to go? The air cleaner? I am using a different oil bath filter than the original. Bear in mind that this engine is in a dozer so everything is going to be controlled manually and there was VERY wet fuel i was running it on temporarily. I think this may be part of the smoke and hard start coupled with glowplugs. The smoke goes away at higher revs for a bit then comes back so that leads me away from injectors. Also leading me from injectors is the fact that the valves havent been adjusted in who knows how long because i pulled it from next to a forest where it was sitting since 1987. After i will adjust the valves, get glowplugs, and new fuel i will try the injectors if they are bad. The smoke is not a thick white. I hooked up the rad for the dozer and ran it for a while and it still did it so its not just me. The shutoff works good. When i push it forward a little, it starts to sputter and die. What is the back position? it only goes a little and at the intake banjo bolt, theres a hissing. Whats that fuel line going to the intake for?

How do i check/replace oil in ip and with what type-15w 40 alright? Also, you dont know how to turn the ip fueling up do you and what make/model is the ip. I did find out that it is an OM621 not 615.

I couldnt find any place in the U.S. to buy the pencil type ones, autozone is garbage. i did find the old style but dont want those kind. Any good places to get them. Id rather not buy from overseas.
Thanks!

Hi,You should give me an e-mail that supports attachment,so that I could send you some .pdf`s...
The fast glow plugs are obtainable from mercedesshop:
here
Standing in front of the engine, the right tube of the vacuum pump is conneced to the brake booster, and the left goes to the air intake, better be transparent-if there is an oil leak due to ruptured diaphragm, oil will be blown into the air intake with all the consequences...A rep.kit consisting od a diaphragm amd 2 valaves is still obtainable...
---the banjo bolt on the intake connects a vacuum line(no fuel in it) leading to the vacuum governor of the IP.Yes,you`ve got a vacuum governor(a diaphragm,a control spring, several spacer rings, the diaphragm must be intact). There must not be any fuel present in the vac. chamber(happens sometimes,if the IP hasn`t beeen services for a very long time...).Of course, the plastic tube to the banjo bolt must be leak-proof.
---Get a big 50cc plastic syringe, connect a suitable plastic hose to it and introduce into the IP sump via the oil fill/breather hole. Suck the old oil, loosen the 14 mm.control plug(nextto the lift pump).Fill in 200ml. of motor oil(15w-40 is OK),wait till no oil emerges from the control hole and tighten the bolt...do a check every(other)oil change....
The pdf`s will give you a comprehensive idea how the vac.governor and IP function...As far as I remember the portions of fuel delivered could be altered by swapping any of the spacer rings behind the governor control spring fo a slightly thicker one...pushing the rack further in "full-load"position...
Hmm,what else... have a closer look at the valve seals, the`re the same as on om 616,widely available and cheap and easy to replace...
below are the vacuum diaphragm and the control spring with the rings...

Hey thanks again

Took two gp's out today and going to order new ones in a bit. They are rated for 9?? volts and i was running 12 thru them. I want pencil type anyways, they are quicker. The vacuum tube to the intake is steel on mine and it is NOT full of fuel so no worries there.

Thanks for all the instructions,, should get me by.
