I cleaned up the pieces of the M110 for pictures, and discovered something interesting.
The #1 connecting rod cap and nuts were laying in the pan. One bolt was in the pan, the other still attached to the connecting rod. The threads on the bolts were all beat to hell. BUT THE THREADS ON THE NUTS WERE PERFECT!
The only scenario I can think of that would cause this failure is that someone pulled #1 cap off for some reason - like to check the bearing - and then did not torque the nuts correctly. They then worked loose and as they did, the bearing pounded itself to death. The engine then jammed when the cap came off.
There was evidence that the pan was removed at some point.
Any other ideas?
Pictures soon!
