Mercedes 1967 W108 250s question

I would like to ask the members if any one can tell me if there is a small spring that is inserted into the distributor aperture before the distributor is put in place, my friend seems to thing that this is correct however, as the distributor did not come with my 1967 Mercedes W108 chassis number 10801222067698 I do not know if this is correct or not and I do not want to damage the engine either way.
I hope you appreciate that as I come from Scotland this is a European car and do not know if the American version differs that much.

Best regards billybob

If you take the dist out and look into the hole you will see the matching dogs for the dist drive..that is hollow and that is where that spring goes.[ it is sandwiched between the two drive dogs when dist is back in. ]
It's purpose is to keep upward pressure on the dist shaft so it does not float up/down from rpm pressures of the rotating helixical drive gear in the engine.
I see many that do not have them put back in from previous service and it will still run, but you will have premature shaft and helix drive dog wear without it.

Thank you I have been trying for ages to get to the bottom of this, I even tried a reputable classic Mercedes dealer in Germany where I get most of my spares and he could not confirm this or even supply the small spring, could you please point me in the direction of someone who can supply me with one.

Well I want to thank all you guys but I think my next stop is NASA to see if there any of these springs on Mars, because guys I sure as hell can't seem to find one on Mother Earth.

funny you should say that. In Bay Shore, NY there's a great autoparts store called Mars. They've been in business for decades with the slogan, "If you can't find it anywhere on earth, goto mars". Bought lots of nifty benz tools and parts from them. One of their owner happens to be a former benz mechanic.
