1970 280se
Going to look at a 1970 280SE this weekend. What engine should this have, and is it fuel-injected?

I am not an expert by any stretch, however, the designation 'se' means the car is fuel injected. I have a 71 280se whcih has the bosch injector pump which provides the fuel to the injectors. The motor I have is called an M130 or 2.5 inline 6. If the car has a V8 then you will be looking at the 3.5.
After spending a good deal of time with my car I have the following suggestions for you. Check the climate control system carefully to ensure that the heater core and blower motor are working properly. I just finished this job in my vehicle and it was quite an experience. Best of luck-looking and maybe-buying! MBG |

280SE/1970 will be a 108.018 chassis with a 2.8 ltr/130.980 Mechanical Fuel Injected engine. In-line 6

MGB--FYI, Your 1971/280SE has the130 engine , which is a 2.8 ltr . The 2.5 ltr engine was the 129 and it was the previous model 250se that used that engine. 250 and 280 of those models signifies the engine displacement..S is the class , and E is Injected.

As Arthur mentioned, it has the M130, which is a 2778 cc 6cyl overhead cam engine with a Bosch 6-plunger fuel injection pump. Output is 160HP (din) or 180HP (SAE). Good luck... 108's are affordable MB classics. No. 1 to look out for is RUST.... so look, and look, and look, and poke everywhere!

And if there is NO rust , buy it b/c anything else can be fixed and that was a great chassis.. owned one for many years. [ but I preferred my lower class Plain-Jane 250/8..114 ]

Thanks for the info.
You already understand about the perils and joys of the restoration/tinkerer enthusiast-obviously. I did want to mention how I like the handbuilt parts in my 280se-no ripping, stripping, etc.. This aspect of the work associated with the car is making me lean toward another in the future as well but in the meantime I'll listen to the dial tone a little longer. MBG |

MBG: there were a total of 14,871 units produced for your 1971 280SE
These 108's are nice... though the 109's are favorable due to the air suspension and 6.3 option, but I'd rather stick with the conventional coils - saves $$ in the end. I just picked up a pristine '72 280SE 4.5 with no rust whatsoever, Cali car from orig owner, and a vintage MB to drive/show without emptying the bank account. Enjoy!!
