Engine Conversion Kits
Does anyone know if there are engine conversion kits available for a 1976 450SL? Who might sell such an item. Thanks for your help.

You can install electronic fuel injection with a Megasquirt system. Read through this link to get an idea. http://www.megamanual.com/index.html
There is also a nice write up by someone who installed in on a 450 in Bend or Redmond, Oregon. It would be worth finding and reading through.

Are you talking about converting from the 4.5 to a non-MB engine? Not that I know of. It wouldn't make sense as it'd cost a lot more than it would to get a known-good 4.5L V8 in to replace the current power plant than it would cost to buy, let's say, a 426 Hemi and tranny, fabricate engine mounts, cut and re-weld the frame rails to maintain structural integrity, etc... Even a SBC would cost more!
Not to say that a well-done conversion may not look good, but that once you're done you have something an MB collector won't want. Its value is what it's worth to you mostly. http://www.tntclassiccars.com/100_0787.jpg
