Injector hoses D-jet 4.5L

I am sure I have seen recommendation on-line before about the best hoses for use on the injector and other fuel rail connections.

Today, I tried to buy hose from the MB dealer. They didn't have any so I went to parts store and bought 5/16" FI hose.

The hose is equivalent to Gates #27003 or Goodyear #65127. This is apparently good for working pressure of 50 psig and has a min burst pressure of 175 psig. Max temperature is 250F. Resistant to gasoline oil, water etc. Wall is thicker than metric hoses I removed from my new (old) injectors, but ID is fine and it fits well.

Do you think this hose is up to the job?

Years ago, I bought a length of hose from MB Canada in Toronto and redid the original leaky crimped connections on my SL. Hoses are still on car and appear good but will be destroyed when I remove them. It was a metric size but don't know the specs.

Last year, I found a dangerous problem. A high tension lead had been arcing across to the hose that connects the rails across the front of the engine. It had charred the hose and had become brittle in a small area. It broke when I bent it. (Now why would an arc go to the rubber hose? Carbon in rubber? ) Anyway, to fix this, I bought some hose from a local parts store - the same 5/16" fuel injector hose and it seems fine.

Maximum pressure is 28-30 PSI so that hose is well within limits.
Fuel injection hose will have it printed on the hose itself,so as not to be confused with small bore water hose and so on. The correct size is metric and if your car still has the original clips they will need to be replaced with proper fuel hose clamps which have a turned up edge to prevent the clamp from cutting the hose. You will need 24 of those.
Another thing to watch for is the plastic cover on the distributor and coil ,all Djet cars should have this but it was often removed for convenience .They are there to prevent raw fuel from spraying onto the distributor etc in the event of a hose failure.

The hose has the right spec, so I guess will be OK. Even although it is 5/16" nominal size and not the metric equivalent it does seem to fit nicely onto the injectors and rail. I have the proper clamps still on my car (bought from MB), and the ones that came with my spare injector set are almost all the right ones too so no shortage there!

I certainly don't have a plastic cover over the distributor and coil . Never seen one on these cars. Is there a part number or reference in one the manuals I could check out?

I would wait and get the right metric line, seems like I had trouble with keeping a tight fit when I used the 5/16 after it was on awhile, perhaps the heat , not sure.
If you use it keep an eye on it

I found another length of the 50lb hose in my workshop, so I am tempted to use it!

But, I think you are right- I would like to use the 7.5mm hose for the injectors themselves. For the other more visible hoses, the 5/16" should be OK and I can inspect it from time to time.

I ended up buying Goodyear SAE30R9 injector hose (made in Europe). It was C$5.68/ft. It has a 160 psig rating, and it has a blue liner on the inside. It is marked 5/16/ 7.9mm. Fit seems fine both on injectors and rails and on the 5/16" tee I have installed for a fuel pressure transducer. OD is such that the clamps fit well.

I think this is the hose that barri recommended. I have decided to use it for both the injectors and my fuel pressure installation.

Thanks to all for input.

5/16" FI hose is 5/16" FI hose... different ODs on some, different look - it isn't an EXACT fit but it works fine.

An EXACT fit hose is a LITTLE smaller ID and OD. To be honest, I have had 5/16" ID hose on my 4.5 since ~2002 when I redid all the lines, and it's been fine EXCEPT That I need to re-tighten the clamps every now and again. No big deal, just be aware of it.

What I found, was that some stores had tubing marked as Fuel Injector tubing, but it had the 50 psi rating - usually marked SAE30R6 or SAE30R7 - Sometimes it says fuel emissions hose. Just found I had to check carefully myself for markings regardless of how it was packaged or what parts guy told me! The SAE30R9 is nearest to the right stuff. I could have ordered the 7.5mm from our dealer - cost would be C$33/meter. Not such a big deal, but the other hose seems just fine and like barri said, it is firmer that the 50psi stuff and doesn't deform as much when clamped.

Just posting this so anyone down the road can avoid the run-around I have had looking for this stuff.

For anyone finding this thread, please note that many of us have found that the 5/16" fuel injector hose is not a good choice. The 7.5mmIDx13.5mmOD fuel hose is the correct hose. Can be bought at dealer or on line, even likely here from Peachparts.

My 5/16" hoses leaked after a few months use. Serious fire hazard.

Hi Ron - I should have listened to you back them As it is, I have probably changed those hoses twice since back then - always using the proper 7.5mm hose and clamps. I bought a roll of hose from a local on-line store. No idea why, but despite being the proper Cohline stuff, it was not expensive.

We still have not ventured South. Although I would still like to pick up the box, if someone else wants it, you shouldn't hold it for me.

I have medical issues that are hopefully not serious, but do affect our out of country travel. Still an outside chance we may head to SC for a month later in winter, but haven't planned anything yet.

Cheers - Have a great Holiday Season!

Happy Holidays to you as well - hope things work out for you in the new year.
Doubt the box will move far from where it sits
Peace!
