learning about 280S W116
hi guys! My neighbor's car, European version '78 280S W116, been sitting for about 4 years and my neighbor asked me to make it run again and managed to wake the sleeping M110 engine with 2 fully charged batteries. I have a question for you all guys in the house: Where can I find the stamped chassis no.? (not the tag) I already found the engine no. so that my neighbor will register and use the car again. roldan Cebu city, Philippines |

Well, I can't say specifically about a W116, but my '84 W123 Euro 300TD has the VIN on a tag on the radiator support, near the hood-latch. It's also stamped into the firewall sheetmetal directly above & behind the engine.

I found the chassis no.! They'd placed in the same area as the W123s(in the bulkhead) thanks Mark! Now I'm thinking of removing and cleaning the fuel tank b/c the fuel filter now is full of gunk! I'm considering a temporary fuel tank and placed inside the trunk(a 20 gal. container), will this thing do? Can a stale fuel affect engine performance? b/c as the engine starts the first time in almost 4 years as mentioned before, I smelled the old gas (it's weird) compared to fresh gas. and lastly, can I change the engine oil ASAP? the oil too smells weird.

I recommend getting the old gas out and changing the oil ASAP. You know it starts and runs now, but continued driving with the old oil and gas could do harm that will be $$expensive$$ to remedy. I don't know what you could do with the old gas, if their is a lot of it. When I have small amounts of stale gas, I mix it with some new gas and burn it in something lower tech and cheaper to fix than a Mercedes-Benz. (Lawn mowers, weed eaters, etc.)

I'm getting that old oil out tomorrow and fill the engine with Mobil Delvac semi-syn or synthetic oil 10W-50 and new filter of course but at this point, the gas tank is out by tomorrow after the oil change and I pressure washed it with water.
This is my step, next, engine tune-up, checking timing, dist. caps and plug wires, changing spark plugs (Bosch W8DCs), points and condenser. |

Hopefully you won't have to do anything to the carb

No need to take apart the Solex 4A1 carbs Peter, as long as there's fuel squirting inside, that's ok! thanks for the heads up man! I'll post my neighbor's W116 ASAP

Had a customer many years ago with one of those.
Of course it was the USA version, with reduced compression and huge 5-mph bumpers. After some carb repairs, it ran pretty well for a big boat powered by only 2.8 liters, with what I considered decent performance, so long as I didn't expect the neck-snapping acceleration of a typical American V8. Anyway, all W116 models, and indeed all Mercedes with the M110 engines that were officially sold in the US, were automatics. I've only seen one gray-market W116 280S (in a stunning Salmon-color!) with a 4-speed stickshift. Perhaps someone else that has done a conversion can say if an automatic M110 engine will accept a manual tramsmission. Happy Motoring, Mark

In the Philippines, our license is allowed for persons who can choose what kind of transmission they want to drive, even disabled person can drive but with conditions (daytime driving only). We have 3 kinds of license,student,non-professional and professional, For people want to to drive MT and AT cars, they can apply for that but thay must have to covert it to professional license if the holders of current non-professional license, the vehicle restriction is bit similar to Irish driving license.

Was your neighbor prohibited from driving his automatic Mercedes 4 years ago? And if you own one car with automatic and the other is a manual, is this 'professional license' very expensive and hard to obtain? Happy Motoring, Mark

My current license is Professional and my vehicle restriction code is 1238, 1-for motorcycles regardless of engine size, 2-vehicles with gross weight of 4500kgs below, 3- vehicles with gross weight of 4500 kgs and above, 8- articulated vehicles 4500 kgs and above If I own both AT and MT, I would apply for an additional vehicle restriction code which is #4 (automatic transmissions 4500 kgs and below) and take the exam (which is bit difficult) and submit yourself for a drug test all in all the fee is 20$, additional 5$ if I renewed my license late. That's it. If I passed the exam, they will take snapshot of me and change my license card with the new code and I can drive both AT and MT cars! Last edited by Takernz_30; 05-05-2009 at 11:24 AM. |
