You need an overhaul, the clutches are bad. See if you can find a replacement trans.

Does this car have a bowden cable? If so, an adjustment might be in order before condemning it.

One of your problems is that you have the later M110 engine in your '72. The '72 originally had a M130. Not that there is anything wrong with the M110 and in fact I prefer the M110 to the M130 but you need to check the transmission for its model number before you can go any further with diagnosis.

Actually, once I took a second look at the picture I noticed the car is NOT a '72 or older. The battery tray is on the right side which was begun in the '73 model year. Double check your VIN for the correct year.

Can anyone confirm whether or not this car has a bowden cable? Please attach a closer pic of there the throttle linkage comes through the firewall and mounts to your engine...

No bowden cable. It has a linkage set-up coming from the carburetor linkage pivot, across the engine, to a bell crank and then a rod down to the transmission. It over-rides the vacuum modulator for shifting points. I suppose if it were completely maladjusted it could create the problem. Try disconnecting the cross over linkage to see if there is any change.

Ahh, the "late of '72" is the key. Anything after July is considered the next model year in the US. I should have guessed it from the Euro lights.

Remove the air filter housing. There should be a flat metal bar running across the top of the engine from behind the carb. linkage over to the passenger (right) side of the engine. This connects to a bellcrank which is connected to a rod going down the back of the engine to the transmission. The bar connects on each end by a spring loaded socket-ball set-up. It simply "unsnaps" by pulling up on the socket area. Re-install it by applying pressure to seat the ball past the spring retainer clip.

If disconnecting the shift points control linkage solves the shifting problem then you need to adjust the linkage.

I think Warren is right about needing a rebuild but the linkage is one thing to try. Before you ask about "how to adjust the linkage" disconnect it and see if the problem is still there.

Thank you all for the advices!!!!!!!!!
Especially MikeD

I disconnected the linkage and i drove the car and it was changing the gears very well. I adjusted the linkage and put it back on.

The shifting problem does not exist any more!!
