My new 1979 Mercedes 280e euro

Hello everyone! I have from time to time visited this forum but with my most recent purchase Im glad there is a forum like this. I just thought I would share some pictures of my new car. I bought the car from the original owner who imported here to california and it has been here ever since. It has approx. 80,000 miles and hasnt been registered since 2001. So getting it to pass smog is my next mission. It has been started here and there but over all it runs well for not being driven in quite some time. I had it towed to my house because the tires were very badly cracked. I just washed it for the first time today. I havent cleaned the interior yet but I hope to tomorrow. I like the manual windows though. Anyway Im glad to have a Mercedes again!

WOW, very nice 280E. You even have the rare tachometer.

I like the centra wheels.

Congrats on your new purchase.

Power sunroof(?) with manual windows
Looks like a blue dashboard w/ no cracks?!
Do I see a hint of rear headrests as well? If yes...
Nice options and congrats!

One quick question though... do you know what these 2 silver screws(?) on the fender are for?

Thanks for all the compliments! The sunroof is a manual webasto sunroof. The car does have the rear head rests, which is cool. No cracks on the blue dash...although there are 3 screw holes which were for a speed sensor that was used on the car when he first got it. Unfortunately he didnt have the speed sensor or the mirror that filled those two screw hole on the fender. Oh the car also has the original first aid kit unopened... and a different unopened mercedes first aid kit in the trunk. It also had the emergency triangle which is pretty cool. The car also had front and rear sheepskin seat covers that looked like they had been on since new. So they were pretty tattered.

When they imported the car here they had to change a few things about the cars details. On the door tag it says it has a 2.3L engine but all the paperwork and engine prove its a 2.8L. I think they did a little trickery to get it here in california. But I have almost all maintenance records and legalization paperwork for the car which is great. Unfortunately my owners manual is in German and I have no idea what the buttons next to the a/c are for. I will have to take a picture and see if any of you can figure it out. On another note, I cannot believe the acceleration of this car! I was very impressed today.

Love those euro 280 cars...

I've had a couple of euro 280Es, and they are quite a bit quicker than the USA version.

I noticed yours does not have the emblem on the trunk. Every one I've had also had the delete. Wonder why? I could understand if it was a lowly 4 cylinder, but....

Noticed you had manual windows and power window switches.....

Never had one with a tach either, now that's cool.

Jim

I think those are for the fender mirrors..
In my opinion they look a bit different when its installed..

I guess your center console was replaced at one time or the previous owner just added power window switches to make the blank spots full? You have manual windows front & rear.

Nice 280E...

Cool car!!

The PNP wrecking yard in San Jose CA had one of these euro 280's that was a 4 speed car a while back.IIRC it was a coupe, not a 4 door. They were selling it for 1700$
I always though a 123 gasser would be a real nice driver.I like my 123 diesel(handling, room, etc)but more power would make a good car even better.

That's still a nice find especially with a blue dash w/ no cracks.
Did the previous owner put that 2nd lock in the rear, next to the trunk lock? What was the purpose?

I'm going to take a wild guess and say it was an alarm arming switch...

The owners manual for my 250CE is in whatever language they speak in Saudi Arabia (arabic? ignorance kicks ass!)

Epic car though, If I had lots of money (hint; I don't) I'd have a euro 280E, they're an excellent highway car, but then again, there aren't a whole lot of Mercedes models that don't make a good highway car-- I'm looking at you Mr. Unimog.

Nice califorina car. Again, I wish they all could be east coast cars...

what's with the "power window switchs" on console when you have manual doors? Are the rear powered?
