Tonight's project

Check the voltage at the battery
before starting
and
after starting
and
after turning on headlights.

I want to confirm the alternator is charging before venturing out of the garage, again. Saturday may be the day Ben makes a trip to the shop. I'm ready to get some touch up paint.

Update

Alternator works!
Voltage Regulator works!

I took Ben for a ride up to the Auto Zoo place to purchase new wiper blades. Hmmmmm. The closest they have is 15 inch universal refills which the guy suggested I use and cut off the end. Upon closer examination of the existing wiper blades, he said these looked fine and that's what someone else had done in the past.

The engine sounds much better with a quart of Lucas in there --- yes I drained some Rotella before adding; don't want to overfill.

Now about the sounds ---- there are 2 sounds. The first sound is a very loud noticable CLUNK and jerk when slowing down to a stop. I'm thinking the transmission is downshifting and there is a LOT of slop in the differential. I guess it is time to uncover the differential and have a look.

The second sound is the whop whop whop --- most noticable when accelerating going uphill.

Well, this past Saturday, I had a paint guy mix up 2 ounces of paint code, Mercedes 304. He was still stirring it when he said, "This is not the correct color."

I had a chance to look on the Data Card from the Classic Center. The interpretation says 334- Paint, Light Blue. I have attached the pdf --- well, PeachParts is telling me that I have already attached the file in the thread. Data Card is attached to Post #93 --- this is the link to Post #93.

Would anyone like to assist with the intrepretation of the paint? Is 334 the "paint code"?

EDIT: 0847 CDT --- Ahhhh HAAA! I think I found the answer:
http://www.landiss.com/paintcodes.htm
Mercedes Paint Codes

304horizon blue (horizontblau)

334light blue (hellblau)

the "noise/sound" update

So, last night, I drove Ben over to BENZSTER's house --- he is an avid Mercedes enthusiast; doesn't post much, very technical, and words a weird shift.

So, after some admiration for Ben, we raised the car up ( SAFELY ) and he crawled under for a peek. There are definitely "loose" seals in the differential area --- he was able to turn (in a circle) some of the rubber seals. When it got to the carrier bearing support, I pointed out how new it was --- and we wondered if the previous owner had heard the sound and this was an attempt to "fix it". Then he pushed up on the driveshaft. And there is like play in the carrier bearing support. Like the driveshaft can float up and down within it.

So, we are thinking maybe:
The carrier bearing support is the wrong one.

During our test drive --- he drove and I ended up in the backseat trying to pin point the noise. I'd say it is NOT a differential nor rear axle noise. The wheels are very tight, so we sure don't expect any bearing/hub issues in the rear wheels.

The Center bearing will move up and down it's it's housing but if it looks like the original, change it .
Check the front bushes in the torque arms ,again if they look old, change them but the rear bushes on the diff end also need attention if the torque arms are leaning over when you look at them from the rear of the car.
Get into the trunk,in the center against the rear wall is a metal box. undo that and inspect the rubber bush under it. This is what supports the diff and if it is worn you will get noises in the car.

Ben goes to work

Well, today's high is only 85F, and the current temperature is in the high 70s, so Ben went to work today. In the mornings, I pull "kid drop off" duty, and the kids don't like the smell of Ben --- the old car smell.

Someone help me come up with a solution to the old car smell!!!! I'm tired of hearing it and told the girls NOT ANOTHER WORD about the smell.

The car guys at work are shocked that the original paint is 45 years old. Again, I have the previous owners to thank. I do wish I would have had a chance to dust Ben before leaving the house.

Smell-wise, cleaning carpets and seats might help. Perhaps some dryer sheets under the seats might do some good as well.

The smell of old German carpets and horse hair pads in the seats!!!! AHH that wonderful smell! I love that smell. Add to that the smell of new coco mats in my 67 Beetle and it is heaven. My daughter does not care for it, but my two boys are learning to appreciate the smell of an old German car.
Some drier sheets may help, but an old German car just has a distinctive aroma. Tell the kids its the smell of MONEY. OLD MONEY!!!

Buy the girls new plastic lunch boxes. They have that new car smell.

When are you going to paint the hubcaps? Maybe a fresh paint aroma would be good...

Work on Ben has come to a standstill --- I want to get my mid size truck project completed, so I can sell my BIG A** truck. That will free up about 4 feet in my driveway.
