Does it work and is it worth it in the long run?

It works, but so does a stock one. Worth it is relative, for the money, not in my opinion with the other options out there.

I feel that the ability to change the warm up curve and enrichment values via Serial cable is invaluable. Solid state electronics and reliable construction also make it (i feel) worth the $650...IF it works well. I've not tried one, nor have I heard anyone talk about it at any length.

Where are you going to find a laptop these days with a serial cable?

damn, $650, lol

it's neat but crap you could about pay some kid to MS the thing for that much.

And more importantly, you ought not to have to change any of that stuff unless you have some really serious mods, CIS will swallow a fair bit of performance enhancement with minimal tuning. And given clean fuel a stock bosch WUR will last twenty years or more. Don't get me wrong it's really neat and all and if I had one of those goofy old 911 turbo's with a high $$$ WUR It'd be an option, but it'd take some severe motivation to have to put up with mech FI stuff AND silicon FI stuff. Worst of both worlds? Probly not, but still. Just my opinion. Go buy one and post all about it.

Good point, but I imagine that there are Serial->USB adapters somewhere.
And there again, an older laptop with a serial port is all that would be needed to run one small program, It would become a dedicated and very glorified Hyper-tech programmer. LOL

It would in theory work well with a mini notebook and a USB to serial converter which is cheap, with a SSD drive . I suppose it's the software platform that would give it hardware limitations.

Smile UT WUR

I can provide perspective from both sides based on personal experience. It is true that all CIS cars with Bosch WUR's can run really well and reliably for a long time. The biggest problem most people have is finding someone to rebuild worn WUR's. I solved that problem when I found Larry Fletcher of CIS Flow Tech. He has rebuilt and recalibrated several Bosch WUR's for me all with excellent results.

The big advantage that the UT CIS WUR has over the Bosch is the ease of adjustablility. The "V" version which I have is easily programmable via USB connection to any Windows based laptop.

The neat thing is that in addition to a warm up cycle that is easily adjusted the UT unit also provides the ability to tie the control pressure to intake manifold vacuum level via a software map. The UT software makes it easy to create a number of different maps which can be quickly downloaded to the UT WUR. It is possible to precisely set the control pressure to a wide range of settings to tune it to your specific requirements.

Some will argue that the Bosch WUR also can be adjusted. This is true however there is a big "but" which applies. There are two pressed in fittings that can be moved up and down in the WUR housing to adjust control pressures. This is done by disassembling the WUR and driving or pressing the fittings up or down. However, there is a relationship between the two of the pressed in fittings and if you get it screwed up you can have a mess.

How do I know this? My mechanic and I tried to adjust a brand new Bosch 060 WUR from the MBCC. We got the warm up control pressure right but when we tried to adjust the steady state and enrichment cycle we got it to a point where it was worse than what we started with. Larry Fletcher to the rescue. He recalibrated and set the control pressures to my requirements and filled the hole we had drilled to install the "adjusting bolt".

Right now, everyone that is driving a CIS car has two excellent choices. If you prefer the OEM Bosch use CIS Flow Tech for all your rebuild work. If you like the adjustability factor go with the UT WUR. I have both.

There you have it! Two great options. Take your pick. Lastly, I have no financial or business ties to either company. I do have personal experience with both of them.

Tom

Have you any contact information for Mr.Fletcher? I too am thinking about the UTCIS system, but can't justify the cost. I imagine the total cost for rebuilding one would be infinitely less?
