steering wheel rubbing/grinding when turning (pic included)
My steering wheel hub is slightly rubbing on the two copper metal prongs and also a third piece. The metal bits come off and make it grind when turned. I tried lubing it with grease but only helps temporarily. Its also rubbing on the round silver peice.
This all starting happening after I recieved the car back from a mechanic that installed a new steering coupling. They say they did not tamper with the steering wheel but it seems as if its missing a washer or something that covers the ball bearing and gives clearance so the steering wheel hub wont rub. Any suggestions. Im wondering if Im missing a peice or something or if it needs adjustment. I think their needs to be some contact though so the horn will work. 1970 220d Thanks, Sean |

Take it back to the shop. They broke it, they need to fix it.
I imagine in the process of their prying about on the coupler they managed to unseat the bearing. I've seen a few people try to short cut dropping the gear box to replace the coupler and it always comes to grief. Some people here on the board say the coupler can be replaced by undoing the steering column but I've never tried it. |

Oh, so you are saying the shaft should stick further out. Makes sense because I would get more clearance and the hub would not be rubbing.

the correct way to R/R the steering coupling is to remove steering wheel and shaft . If they pried it in , I would suggest they bunged up the bearing.
The shaft is meant to compress in collision , more than one has tried to pry the coupler in only to find the shaft shortens and the connection between the shaft and coupler is less than desired CAUTION! Steering Coupler replacement
