250se / 280se COUPE Mechanical Tach
Hi I am new to this forum having only recently aquired a barn find 1966 250SE coupe which was under restoration when the owner passed away.
I am trying to reassemble the engine bay, I have the engine and trans installed and am presently trying to locate / reassemble all the pipe work and ancillary components. Unfortunatley the engine is not the original 250SE it was changed for a 280SE unit in 1977, during this work several items appear to have been transferred from the old 250 engine (oil filter and oil heater tank etc). Now to my question, the car has a mechanical tach the cable is there in the engine bay but I cant find a drive connection on the engine, I have seen a photo of a 250SE engine with what looks like the drive on the engine block behind the distributor, my engine has a plug here. Also the cable looks like it may be too short to reach this area (unless there is some spare behind the dash). Did the 280SE have a mechanical tach if so was the drive in the same place? if so does anyone know the part number for the dive (or have one for sale) and can it be installed without dismantleing the engine? The 68-71 280SL had a mechanical tach drive on the M130 engine.
Prolly find a pic on the internet showing the configuration. The only W108/W109 cars (sedans) with a tach were the 6.3s, and that was electric. Jim

On the coupes and convs, as well as the SL's, the tach was driven mechanically. The plug on your 280SE engine needs to be removed and the additional parts from the 250SE engine added. This should have been done earlier. Do you still have the 250SE engine? If not, call the Classic Center and buy them.

The 250 and 280SL's of the era had the tach with cable. You might find something on the link below

Thanks for the replies unfortunatley the 250 engine is long gone and I'm not sure if the tach drive was ever swapped over.

Give Tom Hanson a call. His number is 949-598-4842.
Tell him your problem and that you need the tach drive components for your 280SE sedan engine. Get the engine number fron the tag on the back of the block above the oil filter.
