Original fluid that should never be changed? Sounds very strange to me.

VW has something like that in their earlier FSMs too. I guess the assumption was that the fluid would probably outlast the car, and that the odds of an individual using the incorrect fluid type and wrecking things was greater than the odds of the trans failing due to lack of fluid. That said, everyone should still change fluids periodically.

According to a 1971 manual to the W114, oil in the manual gearbox should be changed every 20,000 km (12,500 miles), also for the five speed (and don't forget the second drain plug, it adds).
