1973 280c whining rear end.
Hi everybody, i purchased a 1973 280c last August and have been driving and wrenching on it ever since. The car is in great condition and is a pleasure to drive. My only concern is the rear end is making a whining noise. I would like to replace it and am wondering if a rear diff form a 240D would fit. I have a spare one in my garage. I understand that the ratios are different. the 280 has a 3.92 and the 240 a 3.69. I am ok with the gear difference just curious if they are swappable?

Yes, the center sections interchange.
The ratio is stamped in the lower right corner of the back face of the housing (not the cover). 3.69 was used in 74-76 280s. Do you know if you have a 722.2 trans (1st gear start), or a 722.1 trans (2nd gear start). Both are four speed. |

Thanks for the info. I believe it starts in second gear. I will check the paperwork later. Really is a fun car to drive.

You might consider draining the differential and trying whatever modern lubricant Mercedes recommends first--they are remarkably reliable and robust--I've had one last over 500,000 miles
