W115 front speaker location option

As a bit of a audiophile, the single 4x10 mono stereo(after removing the speaker cover found a 3.5" radiosmuck speaker:/) just won't do. I have been trying to find the best place to mount speakers for the front. The best place I can muster up would be the kick panels. There seems to bee nought space to mount my 5 1/4" Memphis speakers. This seems only possible with the removal of some metal... Any thoughts about cutting into the area behind the kick panel?

Won't let me upload a photo at this time I'll try later

The obvious question is whether or not you are changing your dash for a different radio... There are stock kick panel stereo speakers for a 114/115, etc. They are smaller than what you want and they sound nice with the stock Becker radio and don't require cutting metal. From what you are saying, that isn't going to do it for you.

It a nutshell, if you are using your stock Becker radio and you try to power audiophile speakers they will sound like crap, and if you use an audiophile stereo with stock speakers they will also sound like crap...

I dn't know what you mean about a single 4 x 10 mono stereo... Do you mean 2 little tiny speakers were in the place where the oval speaker goes?

Car didn't come with the factory Becker but I would remove it anyway. The car came with a Alpine but I plan on changing that out for a Macintosh or the Panasonic CQ-TX5500 tube unit.
Yea, I was talking about the single 4x10 in the dash... Garbage.

So you are going to put a double-din unit into the center console? I assume this means re-working the stuff that is already there, or is this the "ashtray delete" option....

You are possibly in uncharted territory for mounting larger kick panel speakers. What I can say about the Becker approach is that the factory setup had the speakers NOT flush with the kick panel. Raised out a bit. See attached photos. Maybe a similar approach would make it possible to cut less metal...

Well. The Macintosh is single din but the Panasonic would probably replace the ashtray. As far as mounting the speakers... I have something in the works. Hope they turn out as I have visioned. If so, I'll looking to making custom speaker mounts for w115.

The best sounding factory stereo speakers I've heard in a W114-115 body are the pair in my '72 250C - a single 4x10 in the dash and a matching 4x10 in the center of the rear shelf. They sound pretty good with the original Blaupunkt Frankfurt stereo radio. Unfortunately, 4x10s are hard to find now.
I also had a '72 W114 250 sedan that had the 4 small factory surface-mount Beckers mounted on the kick-panel and rear shelf. Those sounded like crap!
On the sedan, I wound up mounting a pair of coax 6x9s in the under-dash fiberboard insulating covers. Out of sight and no sheet-metal to cut through
Another option I used when I didn't want to hack holes in the interior of an old Fintail, was a pair of sealed 2-way compact box speakers, simply set on the rear floor below the front seats. I've seen them in various sizes with silver or black wrinkle-finished plastic or aluminum cases, rated up to about 80 or 90 watts. Radio-Shack had some, though I haven't checked there lately, but I've seen them at thrift-stores or flea-markets too.

Happy Motoring, Mark

I just mounted some pioneer 6x9 on the back deck of my 69 220, and I put 6.5 round pioneers in my door. If you remove the map pockets you have room for 6.5s, mounted to the door panel, without cutting the door or getting in the way of the window mechanism. You can't really tell that anything is missing after you remove the map pockets except if you bend down and look close to see where the pocket tabs go. The pockets did more trash collecting than anything! Anyway, thought you might find it helpful.

How did you run the wires for the front panel speakers?

I drilled a hole thru the door and thru the door jam, both on the inner side of the door seal, near the push switch. I used a rubber grommet within the holes to protect the speaker wire from the metal edge. The slack wire just folds a bit when the door is closed - there is a gap between door and jam.
