w116 love?

Hi folks,

I just picked up a 79' 450sel. Joined up and see almost nothing about the w116 let alone a 450sel.

We still don't know what you want to know. So let me be blunt:

What do you want to know?

Maintenance?

Engine?

Sources of repair manuals?

Videos?

Specs?

Parts info via startek?

It is a little irritating for someone to come on here and tell us that we have fallen short of their expectations on W116 and 450SEL w/o details.

We do have four or five people here who can read minds, but they are usually pretty busy and don't come on much...

The mind reader is in. I love w116s but am forced to admit the w126 is superior. The w108 is a bigger pain in the ass to work on sometimes, but the Djet fuel injection is easier. I think I will break it down into.

Things you will enjoy
The M117 engine
The space inside
The ride quality

Things that will provoke an attitude of something less than uncontrollable enthusiasm

The climate control servo, and system. Yes all of it.
The emissions control system.

Nothing has fallen short of my expectations and that is with no disrespect. I was just looking for random things. I like trying to read up on stuff before I ask questions and I also like to read random threads so that I can recall them if I ever have a similar issue. The FAQ thing was just a shot in the dark as some forums have them so don't. I did get lucky and find service manuals on w116.org.

Maybe the lack of w116/450sel 4.5 content means that it's very reliable and there's not much need to post things. I'm not sure that's all.

I look forward to learning from you all. Thanks!

Nice Starion

As far as not a lot of info, it depends on what you're looking for. The 116 chassis is the same as the 116 diesel models and there are tons of posts from the diesel owners in the Diesel Discussion forum, so if you search for body/chassis/interior (etc) stuff, include that forum. As far as the M117 engine it has, it's the same engine as in the same year range SL/SLCs (76-79), so include the SL forum in those searches. Otherwise, ask away and we will have a member or twenty who will help!

I just love those W116 4-door sedans! I wish I'd of bought one (W116) new (300SD) in '79/'80. But alas - I warmed-up to and fell in love with an 83 W126 300SD I drove 305K miles before selling, 15-years ago.

Thanks for the posts!

I think the relative lack of enthusiasm for USA bound 116s relates to 1) compromised performance/economy (which applies to all 70s cars) due to smog regulations that no one had the technology to overcome at that time), and 2) ungainly "battering ram" bumpers that were not part of the original 116 design. The euro versions of the same series looked...and went... significantly better. There are very few domestic or USA imported cars from that era that are particularly desireable or economically preservable.
