Replace Engine or Sell?
Gentlemen
I bought this beauty with a rebuilt engine and transmission 18 months ago using my heart instead of my head, and its been an adventure. The highlights: I put in a new fuel pump, the power brake booster and fuel level sensor gasket, carborator gasket. Then it developed an internal oil leak and I blew a rod bearing on a road trip. The replacement engine is $8,000 from metric, and with the new transmission I may need a new torque converter as well. I owe 6k right now on it, and I don't think I can afford to replace the engine. I have it on Hemmings and the price is too high (I know) Can I sell it for 5k? 6k? What do folks think? 1967 Mercedes-Benz 250S Sedan for sale | Hemmings Motor News |

Find a used engine (~$1000 at most is my guess) and have a local shop install it.
As is the car is worth at most $3000. That is what I paid for my '72 in VGC with a blown engine, and many feel that I overpaid. I know that I was the only one that made an offer on the car - not many people want to take on a project like this.

It looks like a nice car in the pictures. The way to make the kind of money you seem to want for the car as it stands is to replace the engine. Ideally it would be best to rebuild the original engine if you're going to get worried about matching numbers etc

Not trying to hurt your feelings - but I read your ad and I would not even bother picking up the phone.
You say the ac has been rebuilt and works well, then you say the ac compressor is in the trunk. How does the ac work well if it's not even hooked up? Vandor gave you some great advice about the used engine, the current value of the car, and how small the market is for people wanting to tackle your project. |

The ad says it's worth 15-20k with the engine rebuilt, which is pristine 4.5 territory. The driver's seat has a tear, it looks like it needs new carpet, the vents are missing chrome trim rings... the 108/109 market has really gone up but that being said, running in pristine condition, a 250 would be lucky to hit 10k. This 250 would be more like $5-7k running, and $2-3k as it sits if you sit long enough to find the right buyer who just needs a 250S with that color combo. Most 108/109 buyers aren't picky over colors though, and prefer to find more well-appointed models over specific colors.

Replace Engine or Sell?
Hey Tom, haha. I just went through a similar situation, on a smaller financial scale. I have a 1970 114 220D.
It blew up a week after I got it. I panicked, didn't know what to do, posted an overpriced ad, etc. I picked up a junkyard motor, put new gaskets on, and put it in. It was overwhelming but went one step at a time and got it done. So don't panic. If your budget is limited do the same. If you have the original matching numbers motor save it for the day you can rebuild it and put it back in. That's what I'm doing, and the 114's aren't worth much (yet). When I look at cars for sale I ask myself "is this person assigning the value of the car to how much money they need?" If yes, I never call. With my ad for an overpriced blown up car I only got crazy people. Wasn't worth it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I bought a really nice 67 250S without an engine and overpaid. I think I paid $4000. Then I bought a running rust bucket 68 280S on ebay for $700 and did the engine swap. It worked out quite well. There are "issues" in swapping a later engine into the car, nothing horrible, but the oil cooler and radiator are different so make sure you keep both cars bits until you have completed your swap if you go down this path...

Gentlemen!
Thank you for all this great advice. Thorsen you didn't hurt my feelings. I really had no idea where to start so I just picked a number. As for the A/C you are were right, I should have said "worked" well. I simply mean that it has to be remounted to the engine, but otherwise its fine. I am going to revise the ad price down shortly. This was a huge help! Thank you all again. Tom |

I've got a 280S motor in a car, if you're interested I could compression test it, its been sitting a while but I was told it ran when parked. I'd sell it for $500 if you came and got it, DC isn't all that far from Columbus...
