The rheostat with the flat side knob you're describing is the variable fan switch. The factory rear speaker fader switch is mounted below the radio into a bracket that's riveted to the lower steel dash frame. The fog light switch can be in different locations depending on year model, and even vary sometimes on the same model depending on whether it was dealer installed.

This is helpful to know. I did run across a car with a worn out fader switch and it had two little speakers printed on the knob.
The fact that Mercedes were sold everywhere made printing the names of things on the switches an impossible thing to keep up with. Without the owners manual it is tough to figure out what some of these older switches do.
So thanks to everyone who helped to nail this down.
