Trouble locating this fuel valve - 220d 1973

Hello all,
I recently acquired a 220d 1973. It runs great but is having trouble starting. I've replaced all the fuel lines, new glow plugs, checked compression, new diaphragm on the injection pump, and still having trouble starting. My mechanic and I both agree that the fuel pump valves (where the hand primer pump) are worn out and need to be replaced. I've been on the hunt for 3 weeks trying to track down the correct valves. I've done two orders for these valves from the internet and both times, the valves I am getting (which say they are for the 220d 69-73) is not the correct size. They are slightly too big and do not fit into the hole. I need to locate the correct, smaller fuel valves. Does anyone know where I might be able to find these online? I have seen some sources for $25-$30 which are non-refundable. I don't want to keep spending non-refundable cash on these parts to try and locate.

Here is the part I recently ordered, but it does not fit:

I found this thread, but not sure if its the same part:

I have attached a photo of the original valve and the replacement valve, which is slightly too big.

Thanks so much for all the info so far. I recently picked up this car 2 months ago and I have been going through making the engine run great. Once it's running like a sewing machine, I will clean it up and post some photos/videos here for you all to see it. I think I got a great deal - from the original owners son, I have the original owners certificate, a letter from Munich Germany to pick up the vehicle, mechanic book with documents and receipts and it just turned over on the mileage (not sure if its 100k or 200k miles). It's in great shape and I am really wanting to do everything right to make the car run as long as possible. This is my first diesel and my first mercedes (I am a long time air-cooled VW guy). Anyways, this place has been some of the best info to get my car running great and I appreciate the help and support here.

My best,
Jordan

are you getting air in your lines ?
have you tried to call the classic center , or used the online EPC to find the correct part number?. Perhaps someone with EPC access can help. You could also go to your local MB dealer they could look up part number for you

I think you may have to spend some time at the dealer on this one. Make sure to bring your VIN with you as they are powerless to help without it.

Something I have run into is that Mercedes will make a running change and start installing something different. The cars built before that date will have one part number and the cars built after it will have another.

And then maybe a few thousand cars later Mercedes would go back to the original part. Perhaps they were just trying out a new design and then went back and used up all the old parts before going with the new one. Who knows?

But if you give the dealer your VIN they will be able to tell you the exact part number you are looking for. They may even have the best price. On some of this older stuff they just never updated the price to keep up with inflation. Or at least that how it seems to me.

This X2. I had trouble with my w115 240D injection pump, the older 616.916 engine had a set up that was quite different from the later 616.912 that came in the w123 240D. The EPC will assure you the correct part number but if that fails call the classic center in Irvine. They hooked me up with an IP rebuilder in San Francisco who knew what I was asking about off the top of his head and had the parts on the shelf. Sadly he did not want my core in exchanged stating there was no demand for parts from that model.

It gets even worse when parts are swapped after the car is built. Be sure to bring the injector pump numbers as they may be helpful. I'd bypass the dealer and go to a pump rebuilder only because they will have more detailed knowledge of the pump.
