Blinkers don't work, flashers don't flash (76 280C)

The lights goes on but don't blink.
Yes, all the bulbs are good.
When I push the flasher button, the lights go on but no blink.
My blinker arm will not stay in position when I raise it to the right hand turn position.
Is there something wrong with my stalk (obviously) that causes the entire system to fail?

Thanks in advance.

Beginning in the latter part of the '72 models the /eights use a combined flasher/directionals unit. The unit is located under the left hand side cardboard panel above the park brake mechanism.

First, check the fuses and then the flasher unit. The pricey but "correct" flasher unit is available but five minutes work with a soldering iron, a bit of wire and two "bullet" end connectors allows you to use a standard flasher unit available at any auto parts store.

Flasher Relay W115 W114

I use one similar to this because I like the louder "click" it makes.

To fix the mechanism to hold for left in right, you can remove it from the steering column.

Disconnect it from the bottom first of the steering column first (it will be very stiff from age) by prying the connector off. Then remove the rubber cover on the stem to expose the screws.

There are two screws holding down the horn wiring and two that hold the mechanism to the steering housing. Once they are out, you can pull the switch out of that hold (and have the wiring connector follow).

Inspection of the unit as you engage it left and right shows two little grey bits of metal that the switch rests on. Each those things are supposed to be cupped to hold the switch in place. They have worn down and just need to be re-shaped with a small round hand file.

I have found a very small triangle file works best here, but it will leave the stalk feeling stiffer than normal.

It will work as it should, but it is will a bit tougher to put in the right or left position.

hei, if your blinkers are coming on , but not blinking, it is probably due to the incorrect bulb wattage used , it should be marked on the inside of the lens housing or close to where the bulb sits. jw

A little bit tougher I don't mind. I just want them to work.

Thank you.

If you have a Dremel rotary Moto-Tool you can reshape the landing slightly. Its a long time since I did one but I don't recall having to remove the switch from the column when using the Dremel with a small round burr bit.

No Dremel but it wouldn't hurt to have one.
Thanks Rick76
