Muffler Question ? W108 V8 and 6 Cylinder the same?
I am wanting to know if the OEM Mufflers for the V8 and 6 Cylinder are in fact the same muffler and or the same length or not
The " Front Muffler " especially ? are they the same muffler ? Or ? well a V8 Muffler fit to a 6 Cylinder SE W108 Are they the same length My 1970 you can't get a original OEM Muffler anywhere but anyway if they are the same Muffler is the Question (I Have a Line on a Good V8 W 108 set of front and rear mufflers ) Mine is a 1970 SE 6 Cylinder with a bad front OEM muffler and I Have a Line on a V8 Muffler and they look the same ? The front is actually what we Yanks would call the center muffler. The Germans call it the front.

ANSA number for six cyl is ME 1407.
ANSA number for the 4.5 is ME 1107. Those are numbers for the rear muffler. I used a 1973 as the model year. The web site I was looking at didn't give specs. so I don't know the difference in size. You might check evil bay. These show up there a lot |

Looking at the timevalve website the rear 6cyl and V8 muffler are the same part. The front muffler is integral with the exhaust pipe so it is different part# due to the differences of the 6/8 cyl headpipe routing. But based on the rear muffler being the same I would assume the front would be the same but not the attached exhaust pipe. So you would need to weld the 4.5 front muffler to your front exhaust pipe.

This is a good posting since if a person takes their car to a muffler shop they are going to slap on whatever they have in stock.
And while we are used to Mercedes like these being used as a daily driver it is best to remember we are looking for parts for a fifty year old car. I started doing old cars in 1970. Trying to find parts for a 1920 Franklin was not easy. For all the hate the internet gets it is a wonderful thing to have for those of us deranged enough to like these older Mercedes. |

[QUOTE=Idle;4325500]This is a good posting
Just in V8 Measurements ( 1973 Mercedes w 108 sedan ) Rear 24 " Long Front 15" Long ( Center ) Now I must go measure the 1970 SE 6 Cylinder set on the Car already Jacked up Yup Just Measured and they are different ( V8 & 6 Cylinder ) The 6 Cylinder 1970 SE Just Measured* Mine*** FRONT is 13 inches long >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Rear is 23 Inches long So they are different but they can work if I shorten the Front Pipes 2 inches And the Back Muffler may just squeeze in V8 8 is 1 inch longer humm Last edited by aluminum; 08-10-2024 at 04:51 PM. |

Thanks All > Most all Cars Mufflers are " Motor Specific " and these W 108 Series may also be motor specific However perhaps differences are "internal differences" Rather than External ? IE : The Outside Measurements may be the same or Close >
As we Mercedes Owners Know these Mercedes have a distinctive sound and just any Muffler may not Please one's expectations > Beyond That what's available like stainless like timevavle as example are Very expensive> Most Likely Good workarounds are out their using a Muffler from some other Car however then you have the Sound Issue back to square 1 Humm / As the Front Muffler ( Called Center Yes ) is really like 2 Mufflers ( Dual inside Pipes ) I think the least Costly Good system (Center Muffler) is 2 Quality Glass Packs side by side perhaps Tack Welded together for added stability would work well but lacking 1 Big Issue that they don't look OEM at all as that's a True Issue to consider yes ? Talking Lower Overall Value due to visual appearance All these Things considered Raise my Interest in a Good Condition OEM Muffler Set Evan from a V8 perhaps > That said I may be in for a surprise to discover a 6 Cylinder with a V8 Muffler sounds like a Helicopter LOL Makes Me think ?: Well I don't want a Chevy in it or a Helicopter keeping Original is challenging So what I have learned is that a Good OEM Muffler has a lot Value at least until they fail |

Once I cut some rusted out mufflers in half to see what the construction is. They are just basically glass packed dual in/out-no chambers.
