What to do with this old transmission?

Okay after selling the engine out of the 72 250 I'm left with a partially cooked transmission. Should I disect it out of curiosity or could I actually repair this thing?

You could donate it too your local rebuilder (IF he needs or wants it).

I have a good one sitting in my garage that I don't know what to do with, so I dunno...

You need a bunch of pullers and other specialty tools just to get it apart, to say nothing of back together. I would go with Ed's suggestion and donate it to a local shop for a future favor.

It is from a 68 250s, so it fits the back of a M180.

$200+shipping.
It looks to have been rebuilt recently because it is free of any grease or accumulation compared to the engine, not even a film of oil on it. But I can't vouch for it. I pulled it for my car, but found out the bearing noise was the rear end.

Better yet, do you have a pic of it?
In any case, i'll have to wait till summer to see if i can fix it or buy one.
But i'm starting my search now in case i do need one, so any information would be welcome.

Thanks

You are correct, it is a M108.

It is just that I have only seen references to the M180 engine in literature...I am confused...

The engine says 108.

Sorry.

No problem 240 ed

If it is a K4A.025 i'm very much interested in it. Do's it include the torque converter and the kickdown silenoid switch on top of it?
Again, if you happen to have the serial #, it would be greatly apreciated.
Here are pics from the CD.

thanks

those are great pictures BTW...

Yes, it is one and the same. 16 bolt pan, etc.

And yeah, it doesn't have the name of the trans on it, but it says 230 sl on the plate.

It has the solenoid, but I left the fluid drive in the junkyard.

That's the one i need!! By fluid drive, you mean the torque converter? (the part held by the man in the pic). To bad , It's also a part in demand
If you'r not in a hury to part with, I'll surely be in touch with you late spring early summer as soon as I know if mine is dead.

I also have a tranny (with converter) to part with, It's from a 1971 280S/SE #1082701 00026 it came with a lot of part with my carwitch Former howner got from a closing MB shop, v'been tolled that it works. But I can't vouch for it.

Yeah, everyone calls this thing a "fluid drive" instead of a torque converter. Mine works perfect as does my current transmission.

The difference that I can discern between the fluid drive coupler and a true torque converter, is that the engine remains directly hooked to the gearbox at all times other than at a stop.
The next time you drive a torque converter, notice this; When you let off the gas before coming to a stop sign (lets say...) The engine speed will drop down and the car will sort of coast more...

It is a small distinction, but there it is.

and yeah, I can hold onto it for now. I don't have a SO to bug me about keeping crap around.
