Howling Rearend

Unfortunately this is not about a beautiful female, but my 73 280C. It is real loud and has been for about the last 5 years. Is this noise actually the rear differential or is it a bearing on the transmission end of the propeller shaft? Anybody have this problem?

RE NOISE MY 280SE 4.5 DID THE SAME

I know its a little different but my 107 did the same I installed some heavy weight fluid to the diff and its much better you might try this and see if it helps, it would also be a good time to check for metal (silver mine!!)in the fluid thats in now...you might need a diff but check the fluid first you never know what you will find...matt

I think I cured two different rear axle whines by putting in Slick 50 Gear treatment.... they had been getting louder for at least 10,000 miles and stopped within 300 from the treatment... but I have no way of proving it... but I sure was pleased it went away.. was about to have to use ear protection...I am also a believer in placing a magnetic drain plug.. or a good magnet on the side of stuff like this.... to keep the steel particles away from the gears and bearings...

Center-support bearing on driveshaft.... I had this problem with 280/8.... It hummmed more than howled..... eventually getting so bad that when putting my hand on driveshaft tunnel while driving - I could feel the vibration.

Unless the car has these symptoms, its probably the differential.

I believe it is feasible to have a gear shop re-shim your gears to give the correct mesh again, and that should eliminate the whine.

It could be the differential or the CV joints, or both. The diagnosis is usually made by putting the car on a lift and having someone "drive" it while another listens. Not for the faint of heart.

howling rearend

Thanks for the help guys, I will try the heavier fluid first, Slick50 second and then the reshimming. I am guessing this is the path from least to the most expensive...

I cured this problem by refraining from Cajun cuisine.

Remember , that is the Slick 50 " Gear Treatment" not the engine treatment....
