There was a similar V8 coupe with stick-shift listed by a Saint Louis dealer on Ebay a couple of years ago. It was a gorgeous car, dark grey, with a burgundy leather interior. That one also had AC and the Euro headlamps. As I recall, it sold for about $16,000. At first I thought this might have been the same car. There can't have been very many of these built with the V8 / manual tranny combo. What are the odds that 2 of them would be in Saint Louis?

Has anyone driven one of these? How heavy is the clutch pedal effort?

I wish! The only 3.5-stickshift Benzes I've seen have been on Ebay - two 280SE coupes in Saint Louis, Missouri and a 350SL in Orange County, California - too far away for me to test drive. Sigh!

Why did he do that?

I was pumped until I saw the speakers.

Better he hid the speakers instead of the radio.

I've had two of them - one came from.......St. Louis, and the other from California. I'm not sure what the St. Louis connection is. They only made about 130 of them but I would say there's at least 20 in the U.S. There must have been a gray market importer in the 80s seeking them out.

They're nice cars, not fast by today's standards but livelier than the automatics. I have no recollection of the clutch being heavy, think it was fine. Of course they are all Euro cars and they are geared very short. My first one, I think a 3.92, was geared like a lawnmower. You had to shift out of first before you got out of the intersection. I put a 3.27 from 280/4.5 in it and that solved the problem. After the switch it would get 25 mpg on the highway. The second one was a 3.69 I believe which was OK but it too would have been better with a 3.27. Both were very reliable - several old timers told me they thought the 3.5 was a better engine than the 4.5. The Euros have no AC, often crank windows, but they are very desirable cars. I think it was the last V8 stick shift that Mercedes made - I'm not aware of anything since. I once saw in CA a 1971 300SEL 3.5 stick shift, 4 speed, same drive train. I would have bought it but it was junk.
