Part Compatibility

Does anyone know if a window regulator from a 1973 450SL would work in my 280SEL 4.5L? Also, if the part numbers are different does that mean that the parts are not compatible? Is a window regulator from a crank window able to be used as a window regulator for a power window?

Thanks
Tim

No, yes, and no.

You must have the correct part number. The one from the W116 chassis is MUCH better, but won't fit the W108.

I'm going to pull mine tomorrow and see if I can repair it, drives me nuts that the driver's side window slips down about a quarter inch. Barely have heat anyway, a leaky window doesn't help!

If you shove a piece of cardboard in the inner bottom part of the window, it will hold the window up.

What about one from a 1973 450SL? They were still making the 108s then, so will this be compatible?
Thanks

Nope, only the part starting with 108 (or 110, or whatever). No parts in common for the W107 (the 72-89 SLs) or the W116 and the W108.

Sorry.

What's wrong with it -- is it slipping like mine or is something else wrong?

Peter: Hopefully it'll just be that the cast (aluminum?) is bent, not cracked. I saw one cracked. But, I ALSO saw one where it was bent and because the person kept using the window despite its slipping (I assume), the gear was chewed up completely (not the 8-tooth one, the 1/4 gear attatched to the lift).

i don't know if your talking about fronts or rears, but this is what i did.my front windows did'nt work but the back ones worked fine so i swaped them out and now the front ones work great, the only thing is right rear to left front and left rear to right front and then i just blocked up the rears until i find more parts.

Mine is slipping down about 1 inch overnight. I shoved a piece of cardboard in the window on the inside and that holds it up. If i push the button all I hear is clicking. I believe this is the regulator.
Thanks

Tim:

Casing is warped and the gear is stripped, like mine.

If we can figure it out, my brother is a tool and die maker working in a gear shop -- may be abpe to make a new gear.

So I will need more than just a regulator?
Thanks

No, just the regulator. Motor is fine, the quadrant gear on the regulator goes sideways and gets ground off. Not the best design Bosch ever came up with, probably when it's not use on any other car.

Tim:

Let me get mine out and see what it's going to take to fix it. May be more trouble than it's worth, although a new regulator is $100 or so.

Peter
