Does anyone here recommend switching my 4.5 from points to electronic ignition? What are ups and downs to this?
Thanks Tim |

YES,i have done the pertronics several times.i think the its a matter of choice on whats better crane or pertronics.i chose pertronics, very easy install.the one thing you want to do is either get a back up set of the one you choose or carry a set of old style points, rotor, etc in your glove box.if they fail on you and your not at home your S O L.with pertronics you can switch back to old style and get back on the road with very little trouble,i don't know about crane.
hope this helps |

I chose the Crain. Either one you will improve performance, my car is sooooo much smoother now than before. You will not go wrong with either one, my sence however is that the Crain is somewhat more relaible. Big tread on this board reguarding the two. Read them. You have a nice car, enjoy.

Tim, I chose the Pertonix Ignitor 11 and the corresponding 45,000 volt coil. Personally, I prefer the magnetic pickup over an optical simply because I felt that the magnetic would be less susceptible to potential dirt and oil films. Also, the Pertonix is all contained in the little black box that goes in the distributer. I suspect that either would be just fine.
I took me a bit of time to figure out how to run the wires so the transistor box was bypassed but aside from that it went fine. For some reason, my vac retard stopped working but that seemed to have been a problem with the dust cover over the points jamming the module, once that was removed all was well.

Would this be best left up to a competent shop or are there some DIY pages. I drive a diesel and tim doesn't have much experience with cars. Neither of us even know what the transistor is!
Thanks David

http://www.vintageperformance.com/retrorockets/credit.htm "Tim, I chose the Pertonix Ignitor 11 and the corresponding 45,000 volt coil.
