107 upgrade to retracting style shoulder strap
Does anyone have experience with upgrading the old style non retracting shoulder belt to retracting style. Interested in DIY cost and ease/difficulty to install. 1972 450SL

Can help with cost -
I replaced the retractables in my 380SL with used because the old ones had chafed almost all the way through. Paid $150 for a complete setup (both sides) from a recycler.

Thanks for the info. At that price i would give it a go. Now i need to know if the inertia reel seatbelts on later model 107s are drop in replacements for the early style 107 cars that are not retractable like mine.

My '81 had anchor points in the floor near the B pillar base where the reel was installed, and at the top of the pillar for the fitting that "turns" the shoulder part of the belt, then on the outside of the seat for the lap belt, which you already have.
I would think that you could fabricate the two attachment points with large bolts and washers. One thing to watch is that the male/female pieces where you fasten the belts in the center come in different sizes, so be sure you get a complete set to be sure your new belts will fasten. Mine did not, and I had a minor hassle getting the right pieces from the recycler. I would do a search on the mbz.org arhives - I think this topic was discussed there.

I searched around thies forum for "retractable seat belts" and did not pull up anything specific for early 107 cars. Some members spoke of a TSB but it does not cover the 107s.
I called a dealer (Caliber motors) and all they could tell me was that they sell replacement retractable seat belts for $167 per side (includes the lap, shoulder and inertia reel). The receptacle cost $63 for the left and $45 for the right. The parts guy did not know if any drilling, welding or additional parts are needed to upgrade my car. With the parts described above it would cost $442 to do the two sides which is out of my budget. I will look into recking yard belts but first i need to know the work involved. Has anyone out there seen a TSB for 107s or done the work for updating a 107 to retracting seat belts?
