camshaft part #
I got this number off an extra head and cam I have
Head # 180.0162701 Cam# 1800510835 will these go on a 230.6? where can i get this kind of information? thanks Brian |

You get the part numbers from the parts books, or parts fiche or the EPC software. None of which are in reach right now. It's snowing here right now. Errg.
The other useful source of information is the technical data manual. But it doesn't have head casting numbers. It does have cam shaft codes; the number stamped on the rear face of the cam. From memory, the 180 head comes in several flavors, since it was in production for about 10 years in half a dozen different cars & unimogs. Never having bothered with rebuilding one, I've not looked at any of the head gaskets. I would not be surprised if most of them are identical, allowing the heads to interchange. There was a change made to some motors about cam shaft pedistal height. If you have the pedistals that came with the cam, then this is a non-issue. Worse case, you need to invest in a dozen adjusters at 1$ each. My first car was a 1969 230/8; what you're calling a 230.6. I still have its head around here someplace if you need a head and yours won't do. -CTH |

it's a 68 230.....w110...
I picked it up for 500$ as a learning experience... and I enjoy cars tremendously... As I step through this thing one item at a time.. I keep running into another problem... first the carbs were just horrible, so I swapped them for some new webers... nice kit... from JAM Engineering.. Now that car is not running so rich, it's running very hot... probably radiator.. i'll clean that.. I took off valve cover to adjust valves and noticed 2 cam lobes are scored pretty badly... I have another head and cam that came with the car... just wondering if they are right for the motor... Why is the head gasket $100? is it made out of gold? ahaha Brian |

The head gasket on that car is just a low-stock item. That causes prices to rise a bit. Try pricing an M189 head gasket some day.
Your spare head should have the same casting number as the one on the engine, I presume it doesn't. -CTH |

head on the car says the same thing as other head 230, but
part number is 180.0162601..... I noticed this head does not have any plugs in it while the 2701 head does... for smog or fuel injection? i do not know.. I'm by no means an expert with Mercedes...

I talked to a guy at Brinsons today for about an hour... ordered some stuff and CD Rom for my 110... He told me some very interesting stuff...
I told him about my Head Casting Numbers and he told me to not get too caught up in them because Mercedes did a lot of changes on the fly during production. Many of them are documented and known and some are not. He told me to physically compare everything regardless of what I am told or read. Unless the car is 100% stock from the factory, I am in unknown waters... Today I figured out that my Distributor is from a 220....different advance curve etc....

parts changes aren't quite as promiscuous as a chevy, but there are lots of bosch things you can interchange. He's right about not worrying "too much". But it's good to understand which parts are off base. -CTH
