Do I Really Need the Oil Cooler Hooked Up on 1974 240D?

I have a 1974 240D and the oil cooler just sprung a bad leak so I have bypassed the cooler by connecting the intake and outflow hoses together. My question is how essential is this oil cooler? I live in a cool coastal climate in Northern California where it very rarely even gets up into the 70s. This time of year it is in the 50s and 60s at the very warmest. Thoughts? I am trying to avoid spending $250 for a salvaged oil cooler.

You might want to change the filter and oil a little bit more frequently. So long as you're not towing or driving through deserts I guess you're unlikely to really need it.

By diverting the cooler lines as you have you have ensured that the thermostat does not interfere with the complicated filtering system in the oil filter housing which might be fooled into thinking that the filter is blocked and thus bypassing the filter completely. Just blanking off the unions at the oil filter housing is the worst thing to do if you have not removed the thermostat.

The added benefit of having a loop of oil cooler line is that if you are ever curious if you need to fit an oil cooler at a later date you could always check to see how warm the cooler line is after a run.

You shouldn't really need it, but... wait for it... you'll be cooler with one.

Thanks. I'll give it a go without it.

The early w115s (at least mine) did not have an oil cooler. So no oil cooler was "good enough" for many years.

Do the early W115 cars without an oil cooler have a wider radiator to fill the void where the oil cooler would go?

One solution to this is to visit a junk yard and pick up a transmission cooler from a Dodge minivan. The cooler does not know what is supposed to be going through it.

You would need new hoses and you would need to find a way to mount the cooler, but this is a cheap fix for the problem.
