"16x7.5 works great with 225/50/16."

I would really like to keep the 8-hole stock wheel look on my '92 400e but go to a larger wheel. Are there 16" 8-hole OEM wheels that fit the 400E ? What about aftermarket 8-hole MB look-alikes ?

Also, what brand of tire is best for this setup ? Mich. Toyo. etc....
Thanks

Mercedes makes a Euro-wheel in 16" x 7J that was used from March 1993 forward once the brakes were upgraded on the 400E in Europe. I have these wheels on my car. If you need the part number email me.

Tire size recommended by MB is 205/55/16 for the I6s and 215/55/16 for the V8s.

The 8 hole replica wheel is available in 16" for your car and with a set of Michelin MXV$ Plus tires (215/55-16) mounted on them your cost would be $1020.00 plus delivery. This package would include new MB center caps and all needed lug hardware.

Thanks, Luke

Regarding the 215/55-16 Energy MXV4+ Michelins: I am currently running Pilot XGTV4 205/60-15s. I am contemplating changing to the same rim as JC300E, above. my car is a 300E with the Sportline suspension. I have used the pilots on a number of cars, and like the handling and ride, and wouldn't want to go too much stiffer on ride quality. I am a little concerned that the xgtv4 pilots will be a little too stiff on the 225/50-16" rim set up, but don't want to sacrifice too much handling. Will the Energy tires make the grade for my handling, or are there other tires I should consider. I have heard that MBs like Michelins best, and the car certainly felt better on the Pilots than on the old Turanzas. Any suggestions?

JCE,
Why an all-season tire in CA ?

Good question. I have used the Pilot XGT V4 since it came out because:
1 When it rains in SoCal, the freeways turn to a mix of oil, water, and spinning SUVs. This is the best Michelin I have found so far at dealing with this mess.
2. Every winter the snow line gets as low as 2000 feet. Occasionally the main route north out of LA (I-5 Ridge Route) gets so much snow it is closed. I don't want a special winter tire for going to Big Bear, driving out of Antelope Valley on weekends, or driving anywhere North or East.
3. The tire gives the best performance to comfort blend I have yet found.

This said, I am not locked in to any particular model, or even just Michelins. Do you have any suggestions for 205/55 - 16 or 225/50-16 tires on the rims described that will give great performance under spirited driving and the conditions described above, and will not make the car less comfortable than it is now (just about perfect to my tastes!)?

I'd stay with 205/55/16 for a 300E. I don't think that engine can take advantage of a 225/50/16. Tirewise, I like mine. Bet you would, too. They are pretty cheap now as well.

Also, if I were you, I'd get a set of those really cheap rims for Luke for some snow tires. No sense in sacrificing performance. Get some Michelin Pilot Alpins in stock size. They perform rather decently for a snow tire, too. You could get those $35 rims and the tires for probably near $500.

Just make sure you don't put a 205 or 215 on a 7.5" rim. Way too narrow a tire for the rim. It actually feels too narrow.
