When my muffler on my previous car, an 83 300SD rusted out I managed to find several good ones at a local scrap yard at a very reasonable price.

However, when recently my muffler on my '95 E300D went, the chances of finding one in a scrap yard were NIL. Midas muffler quoted me a price which was almost double of what the Dealer wanted for it. So i bought it from the Dealer and had Midas, install it. They could not believe that their muffler would have been almost double the price. I showed them the invoice and they scratched their head in disbelief. So check the dealer as well. You may be pleasantly surprised. On the other hand, you may be shocked, but give the dealer a try.
