When my muffler on my previous car, an 83 300SD rusted out I managed to find several good ones at a local scrap yard at a very reasonable price.

However, when recently my muffler on my '95 E300D went, the chances of finding one in a scrap yard were NIL. Midas muffler quoted me a price which was almost double of what the Dealer wanted for it. So i bought it from the Dealer and had Midas, install it. They could not believe that their muffler would have been almost double the price. I showed them the invoice and they scratched their head in disbelief. So check the dealer as well. You may be pleasantly surprised. On the other hand, you may be shocked, but give the dealer a try.

I got the resonator and muffler for my SDL from a local place, $40 and about 30 minutes of my time.

A new one for the SD (just muffler), I hacked off and paid $9 at the local Pick-N-Steal.

I drove my SDL about 8 times with an open exhaust, sounds like crap. I got to the point the drone and obnoxious sound I was ashamed to drive it about.

I did gettin' on the freeway. No difference in performance. Stock exhaust system is fine for stock power levels.

Cranking the full load stop, more boost, etc. Then a larger downpipe could easily help out lower EGTs and maybe free up some top end HP. But again, no point on a stock motor.

straight pipe. I've had a hole in my rear muffler for about a year now. My intention has been to just tack a straight pipe on the rear to move the exhaust gases out from under the car (still have to clean sooty black spot above muffler though). With the CC and the turbo already in line I don't notice much in the way of added noise from the hole; if anything a tiny bit of extra low rumble - I think it sounds cool.
