I used an additional filter with the two tank system I have in my 85 300D right at the extra fuel tank. It depends on the micron rating of the filter you plan on using. If it is a finer filter then you should be OK. I would suggest just adding it before the stock prefilter so you will have the added protection plus you won't have to spend the extra money on the OEM filters.
