You are correct. It does affect the tranny shifting........indirectly........
when it leaks.
If you remove all the lines to the black box.........follow them to where they enter a T (2 of them).........remove the T.........and connect the remaining two lines with a short piece of hose..........you might find that the harsh shifts are eliminated.
The harsh shifts are caused by a loss of vacuum to the modulator. Either a leak or a bad vacuum control valve is your problem.
