My experience with old headliners is that if it is the old early W123 perforated style, you will probably be able to swap with no problems. The later style non-perforated textured style seems to be more more fragile as it ages. These do not fare well at all here in Florida.

I have a 30 year old perforated W116 headliner that I removed (carefully) for $4 at upullit that is going in my W116 when I get around to changing the window rubbers. I am sure it can be done with the perforated ones.

One problem on the W123 though, is that the back tucks under the rear glass rubber. You may have to creative in that area.
