Can a headliner be swapped from one W123 to another,easily....

Can a headliner be swapped from one W123 to another, easily? reason is someone is offering to sell me a new interior for a reasonable amount, but the technical issue that makes me nervous is whether I can swap the roof headliner and the sunroof trim intact without being sloppy, tearing it or having to use glue to fix up the botched mess. No reference in the shop manual, but if i had pictures, I would try it...

Rich-

My experience with old headliners is that if it is the old early W123 perforated style, you will probably be able to swap with no problems. The later non-perforated textured style seems to be much more fragile as it ages. These do not fare well at all here in Florida.

I have a 30 year old perforated W116 headliner that I removed (carefully) for $4 at upullit that is going in my W116 when I get around to changing the window rubbers. I am sure it can be done with the perforated ones.

One problem on the W123 though, is that the back tucks under the rear glass rubber. You may have to get creative in that area.

I'll be doing a W116 one early this summer myself.

swapped, yes, easily no
I was able to revive mine in my 71 220 by cleaning then spraying with vinyl paint. I found that a paint can opener was the perfect tool for prying and then stuffing the headliner back into the rubber stripping, I then secured using hot glue, worked great
