I wonder if the engine didn't "Run Away" in that it started running on its own lubricant and over rev'ed. I had a VW dasher wagon with the 1500 diesel. As the rings wore, It pushed extra oil into the air intake and would start accellerating on ots own . The engine would rev to oblivion as it was not being governed by the inj. pump. The fix was to put an external breather on the engine
