I wanted to buy it but asked him if I could just take it to a mechanic before I purchased it, just to see what I would be getting into and he refused. Anybody know what these symptoms could possibly be?

How much? What condition is the rest of it in? How much rust? If the price is low enough it could be a value. The white smoke really concerns me though, because that could be a head gasket. What was the temperature gauge reading? Look at the dipstick and see if there is any water in the oil. The seller sounds like a real horses a$$ because he will not let you take it to a professional for an evaluation. That attitude will help to drive the price of the car down. Give it a few days and see if he changes his tune.
