These Mercedes trunk locks has got to be the funkiest out there. After I got it opened through the first aid kit and figured out how it works, I have determined that my problem all along was due to binding in the rotating part of the lock mechanism. What was happening was that neither the key nor the vaccum motor moved the lever (that pops the trunk lid) far enough into position so that pushing on the lock button did not result in pushing on the lever. I took the lock out, cleaned and lubed it and now it opens fine with the key or vacuum.
