lost trunk key
I managed to lose my trunk key, which is different than the door/ ign key and the vacuum trunk lock does not work. I think the trunk lock is not original so getting a key made by Mercedes is not gonna work.
What is the least intrusive way to open the trunk that you know of? I do not want to drill and destroy the lock because if I can get the trunk open, I can take the lock apart and make a key for it. Ideas? ![]()

Call a locksmith...they can pick the lock without trashing your car....however...it may be cheaper to drill the lock and get another if it already is different than the others.

You can spend alot of time trying to figure out how to get in the trunk. I took the first aid kit out and tried fishing with a bent wire

Just pay a locksmith $45 and they will make a new key for you. Drilling the lock is not the real good way to do it, then you will have the correct key for your car.

got trunk open
I haven't been driving the 300D as it was not insured. Just got it re-insured and registered and I hope to be using it more. I was able to look at the trunk of a friend's 300D, by popping off the plastic cover, I noted the vacuum motor rod's movement. I was able to access it via the first aid kit opening into the trunk, and by using a 6 ft long furring strip to push on the rod and opened the trunk. Yea! Apparently that rod was hung up on the sheet metal and that's why the vacuuum wouldn't unlock it. Now I can take the lock out and make a key for it myself. I am glad I didn't drill it out and ruin it. I did call a locksmith and the cheapest I was quoted was $140 to make a key by impression.
Anyone have a key blank for the trunk lock? Please email or pm me. Quote:

more info
These Mercedes trunk locks has got to be the funkiest out there. After I got it opened through the first aid kit and figured out how it works, I have determined that my problem all along was due to binding in the rotating part of the lock mechanism. What was happening was that neither the key nor the vaccum motor moved the lever (that pops the trunk lid) far enough into position so that pushing on the lock button did not result in pushing on the lever. I took the lock out, cleaned and lubed it and now it opens fine with the key or vacuum.

Congrats on the success, I too did the same for mine as I had no keys when I got my car, took a gamble and ordered a master from MB, which turns out I still have original locks so they worked. Didn't want to wait a week to see what treasures might be in the trunk, (ended up just being an old moldy AAA tour book) so I did the same as you, only with a piece of steel tubing, and figured it out by shoving my head thru the first aid hole for a few hours, lol. I think I was the last to receive the perverbial "Macgyver award" for this, so I now pass it on to you. A week after receiving my key, I got a call from the parts place saying he had received another key he thought was for my car, I read him the VIN and he confirmed it to the MB packaging, sure enough, in all of their accidental generosity MB had decided to send me a free second key....what luck! |
