Hey stcbenz83:

Looking at your "profile" - you're a young "pup" Maybe the cop doesn't care for "little whippersnappers" driving expensive cars while they "slave" for the public good while barely getting paid to have their @$$es shot off for little bucks.

Also, cops don't take too well to getting taught a lesson in public. Even when it's just you and him - alone.

Best thing to do is realize this: They are the ones with loaded weapons - coffee on their breathe and powered-sugar dust on the uniforms. You are unarmed, slow-witted and probably hungry. Sounds like a "vinegar/oil" mix to me. Just do your best to bite your tongue and go with the flow. As any good lawyer will advise you ... Just answer the question, don't elaborate or give out too many details. Be polite and courteous. If you feel like you're having to kiss @$$, then you're going a good job.

Remember, he has the power. The power to either write you up for any, and all, infractions that may, or may not, be there ... OR ... he can give you a "lecture" and let you go.

My vote? Kiss - kiss - kiss. Not enough? Kiss again. And when you're done? Offer to shake his hand, tell him he's doing a good job and hope you're sincere enough that he's not insulted.

Points and insurance rates stick around A LOT LONGER than the stain of "taking one for the team" - particularly at 2200 at night or 0200 in the morning.

Yep, they pulled you over - that's what they're trained to do when THEY believe they have a drunk driver on their hands - one of the signs they use is "brights" on or fog lights on when there's no fog...drunks USUALLY (profiling here) fail to dim their lights when there's oncoming traffic. It happened to me in the Dells area a few years back. 0200 in the morning (Bar time) on a Sunday morning - I just pulled off I-90/I-94 and I'm heading into town on a median-divided 4-lane. Oncoming car, in the far-right lane "flashes" me that I have my brights on - I "de-bright" but he pulls a "U" and lights up his "cherries" and pulls me over. Reason? Even though I dimmed, his training taught him that I may be a drunk driver. Was I? Nope. Just a traveler fresh off the Interstate. No harm, no foul, so no ticket. Believe me, he was, and will continue to, look for and get off the highway, drunk drivers. At 0200 in the morning, should I be pissed that he thought I was a drunk? Life's to short to piss and moan about your safety. For every one or five of me, he manages to get one drunk, that's good "policing" to me. Better he meets the drunks than me or my friends.

On a side-note: I have many friends who are in the Law-enforcement field - FBI - State, County and City officers and officials. My brother-in-law was on-duty when he was hit and nearly killed by a drunk-driver. Don't get me wrong. I'm not trying to lecture anyone on the board here about drinking & driving. I'm just pointing out that the techniques officers use to catch drunk drivers are exactly that - techniques and proven screw-ups that scream "I'm a drunk! Stop me before I kill myself or someone!"

And, when you look at it in that light, isn't that what we all REALLY want?
